The material from which the utensils we cook are made can migrate into food and contaminate it, in a way that is detrimental to health.

The material in which we are going to cook or preserve the food is basic to ensure that during these processes no toxic substances are released that pass into the food.

To equip our kitchen we should avoid utensils and kitchenware made of aluminum (due to the toxicity of aluminum salts), copper, and Teflon with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which behaves as an endocrine disruptor.

The safest materials for cooking are glass, titanium, ceramic (without flakes) and iron certified without heavy metals, clay (lead-free), wood, bamboo, and quality stainless steel.

KITCHEN UTENSILS AND MATERIALS, WHICH ONES TO CHOOSE?

In this guide, we show the different utensils used in the kitchen. And in each one of them, we indicate those that we have to avoid, or choose, according to the material with which they are made.

PANS

Avoid...

  • Old Teflon with PFOA, related to hormone-dependent tumors. If the pan is scratched, the poison passes into the food at high temperatures.
  • Aluminum, without a proper coating, is a possible neurotoxicant.

It is safe...

  • Use certified pans without heavy metals, nanotechnology, or PFOA.
  • Titanium is non-toxic and does not cause allergies.
  • Glass is suitable for cooking.
  • Quality ceramic, but not scratched.
  • Quality steel, the most advisable is the surgical one.
  • Certified iron without heavy metals.
  • Aluminum, only if it is anodized.

CASSEROLES

  • You have to avoid any material with lead, many clay pots contain it.
  • copper.
  • Old teflon with PFOA.
  • Chipped pottery.

  • Lead-free glazed ceramic.
  • With titanium coating.

CUTTING BOARDS, CUTLERY, AND LADLES

Avoid...

  • Better not to use plastic tables because they deteriorate more.

PASTRY MOLDS

Avoid...

  • Aluminum.
  • If you want to continue using the aluminum molds, you have the option of covering them with parchment paper.

It is safe...

  • Platinum quality silicone.
  • Glass or ceramic certified for the oven.

BOTTLES AND TAPERS
